It is a newcomer in SF when it comes to Irish Pubs. Opened in late 2024 by Dublin native Neil Holbrook (with co-owner Louie Caponi), this Irish pub and music venue took over the former Milk Bar space (one of my favorite spots back in the day)

The inviting interior features a crackling fireplace ideal for nursing a perfectly poured Guinness (widely praised as one of the best in the city), while big screens keep sports fans happy. The bar has live bands and traditional Irish sessions most nights, comedy on Mondays, trivia on Wednesdays, and Grateful Dead-themed shows. Happy hour runs Monday–Friday from 1PM to 6PM.

Even though this is a fairly new bar, it really has the feel of an Irish Pub that has been around for decades. It also has a pretty choice location so it is the perfect spot to have a beer after a day in the park or to grab a drink after doing some shopping along Haight Street. There are also a lot of cool spots around it like Kezar Pub, Murios Trophy Room and Zam Zam, so it is a great spot for an impromptu pub crawl.

O’Reilly’s Pub

Neighborhood: Haight Ashbury

Address: 1840 Haight St, San Francisco, CA 94117

Website: https://oreillyssf.com/

Durty Nelly’s SF

Photo Credit: Facebook / Durty Nelly’s

Durty Nelly’s

Durty Nelly’s is a popular Irish pub located in San Francisco’s Inner Sunset neighborhood. The menu features classic pub fare, including fish and chips, bangers and mash, and shepherd’s pie. The Plough and Stars is known for its live music. The pub has a stage in the back where local and touring musicians perform traditional Irish music and other genres.

The pub has been in business for over 40 years. It was founded by Irish immigrants who wanted to create a space for the Irish community to gather and celebrate their heritage. Run by Irish natives, it’s renowned for pouring a stellar Guinness and serving up hearty fare from its attached John Campbell’s Irish Bakery, including fresh soda bread and scones that rival those in Dublin. The interior is no-frills—think wooden booths, dim lighting, and a few Celtic touches, but the charm lies in its simplicity and the friendly banter from bartenders who know their stouts. It’s a small, unassuming spot with a jukebox pumping classic tunes, a pool table that sees constant action, and a clientele of neighborhood stalwarts who treat it like a second home. The bartenders, often sporting Irish accents, pour a mean Guinness and keep the Jameson flowing, while the lack of a kitchen is offset by the BYOF (bring your own food) policy—pair it with a pint and you’re set. It’s not flashy, but that’s the point: O’Keeffe’s offers a raw, no-nonsense Irish pub experience that feels like a time capsule, perfect for those who value atmosphere over amenities.

O’Keeffe’s Bar

Neighborhood: Inner Richmond

Address: 598 5th Ave, San Francisco, CA 94118

Ireland’s 32

Named for the 32 counties of a united Ireland, this Inner Richmond pub flies under the radar compared to its flashier neighbors but delivers a staunchly authentic experience. It’s a hub for live music and Celtic bands and folk acts take the stage most nights (except Mondays). There’s no full kitchen, but bar snacks like peanuts and the occasional pop-up food event keep you fueled.
