I can’t really say that I have come across anyone who has actually said they hate pizza. People might hate a particular type of pizza or pizza from a particular restaurant, but there are too many options to just not like it at all.

I also think that the pizza that you think is the best can differ greatly from other people depending on where you grew up. Growing up in Pennsylvania, our local pizza spots were closer to New York pizza. Large slices loaded up with Mozzarella that had delicious little almost-burned spots on top that gave it amazing flavor. Folding it in half was a necessity in order to eat it with one hand. When I moved to San Francisco, the pizza was different. There were a lot more fancy toppings, the crust was crispier and the cheese blends were not the same. So, when I was trying all of the pizza places in the city, I was on a constant search for something that reminded me of home. I did find some that fit the bill, but also found a lot of other great options that were different, but still delicious.

Because there are a lot of differences when it comes to the best tasting pizza, no list can be perfect. Dave Portnoy, probably the most famous pizza reviewer currently, doesn’t like parmesan cheese on his pizza. I think parmesan cheese is a great addition to almost any pizza. Some people like no toppings, some people like all the toppings. Some choose a soft crust and other like a crisp crust.

No matter what kind of pizza you like, San Francisco is loaded with options from Chicago style to New York style to Classic Italian with lots of unique combinations of ingredients.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" In fact, he has won 13 world titles and it’s easy to see why if you grab a slice at one of his restaurants.

Tony’s Slice House Franchises in the city are all amazing, but if you really want to get to experience Tony’s amazing food, head to Tony’s Pizza in North Beach. You literally can’t go wrong with anything on the menu and the portions are huge. This place is best with a very large group so you can order a whole bunch of things and try them all. Besides the pasta and salads on the menu, he offers a bunch different types of pizza like Detroit, Sicilian, Neapolitan, Roman, St. Louis, New York Coal Fired and Classic Italian, California. Each one has their own unique flavor, so it is worth trying them all out (although it might take a few trips). We pretty much recommend everything on the menu, but if you need some recommendations, go with La Regina, The Red Top Detroit, or The New Yorker.

Tony’s Pizza Napoletana
1570 Stockton St
San Francisco, CA 94133

Little Original Joes

Original Joes has several locations in San Francisco, but the newest spot is located on Chestnut Street in The Marina. It’s an old school restaurant that is well known for delicious pasta and entrees like Filet of Sole Piccata (amazing). It wasn’t until recently that I had a chance to try one of their pizzas, but I was blown away. Their crust is amazing and cooked to perfection. The cheese they use is also perfect with a tangy tomato sauce. I have heard other people rave about their specialty pizzas like the tricolore pizza, but we are a fan of just the basic cheese.

Little Original Joe’s
2301 Chestnut St
San Francisco, CA 94123

Amici’s

Amici’s is pretty much my go to for a quick Uber Eats meal. I have tried some of their other pizzas, but the basic New York Cheese Pizza is my favorite. The cheese blend is delicious (I still haven’t quite figured out what makes it taste so good, but I have a theory that is might be the addition of scamorza). The crust is well done and almost burned (which is how I like it) and the cheese is perfectly browned. I typically order a small side of their pasta sauce to go with it and pour it on the top of the pizza before I eat it.

Amici’s
1200 Market St
San Francisco, CA 94102

Joyride Pizza

While I typically prefer basic cheese or possibly pepperoni pizza, Joyride is the exception. They have thick, greasy (the good kind of greasy) Detroit-style squares that have tasty caramelization around the edges. I do love their classic cheese and pepperoni, but there are two other options that are absolutely delicous. The Sweet Heat Pineapple (yes, pineapple) has hot honey and jalapeños mixed with fresh pineapple and peppers, which works perfectly together. The other option that I highly recommend is the Sweet Bianca. It combines Fig Jam, Taleggio, Ricotta and House Cheese on their crispy crust and it is one of the best pizza combos I have ever had.

Joyride Pizza
2055B Union St
San Francisco, CA 94123

Gioia Pizzeria

Gioia Pizza is just delicious. There isn’t much to say except that the crust, cheese and sauce are all really good. I usually opt for pepperoni.

Gioia Pizzeria
579 Hayes St
San Francisco, CA 94102

Fiorella

Fiorella makes pizzas that just feel kind of fancy. Both the Neapolitan with secco olives, capers, oregano, chiles and more and the Margherita are great. The best pizza, in my opinion is the Salsiccia pie, but I actually prefer it without the sausage. However, although the pizzas are amazing, they aren’t even the best thing on the menu. Two of my favorite pasta dishes in SF both are served here, the Radiatore All Vodka Diavolo and the the Rigatoncini Al Bolognese Calssico are both unbelievably good.

Fiorella
2238 Polk St
San Francisco, CA 94109

Capo’s Pizza

Another one of Tony Gemignani’s restaurants, Capos offers both Chicago style and Detroit Style Pizza. They are both great, but the Deep Dish Chicago style is the clear winner for me. It is a deep dish pizza with a thick crust gets an amazing caramelization from the cast iron pan (reminds me of Pequod’s in Chicago). The cheese is added right on top of the dough with the sauce on top, so it looks a little different from your traditional pizza. It takes almost an hour to bake, but it is definitely worth the wait.

Capo’s SF
641 Vallejo St
San Francisco, CA 94133

San Francisco Pizza

Other Great Pizza in SF

Del Popolo
Nob Hill

Del Popolo started as a food truck and now serves high-quality Italian dishes alongside pizzas at their brick & mortar location in Nob Hill.
